It was an unusually strong night, with a lot of groups blending well and a few ready to tour already. Below's how I ranked them; put inyour thoughts in the comments or on Twitter at #ndidol.

1) Jessica Sanchez, Deandre Brackensick and Candice Glover were electric on "It Doesn't Matter Anymore" -- real musicians, blending three differentvoices well. "Wow, man, you all blew that out" said Randy Jackson . "You guys sound so good, amazing!"
2) Odd couple Richie 'Cowboy' Law and Jermaine Jones were fantastic with their deep, sincere voices on a slowed-down "Breaking Up is Hard to Do." Jennifer Lopez said it best: "Oh my god, I love you."
3) Young hotshots Jeremey Rosado, Ariel Sprague, Gabi Carrubba and David Leathers's "Rockin' Robin" was fun and got a "nice, nice; that was hot, man, I was really, really impressed" from Jackson.
4) Lauren Gray, Wendy Taylor, and Mathenee Treco's "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" showcased Gray's X-factor voice; something about it really sticks in your head.
5) Jairon Jackson, Neco Star,Heejun Han, Phil Phillips' "I Only Have Eyes for You" catapulted Star to my attention; also glad to see Han cry when they got through, he's a funny guy but he also really cares about this.
6) Schyler Dixon, Brielle von Hugel and Molly Hunt's "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" was most notable for von Hugel's distinctive, oddly enjoyable voice.
7) Haley Johson, Reed Grimm,Elise Testone and Eben Franckewitz's "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes" didn't do much forme, but got a standing ovation from the judges.

Adam Brock, Erika Van Pelt, Angie Ziederman and Shelby Tweten performed "Great Balls of Fire" well, even if the vocals were nothing electric.
9) Skylar Laine, Colton Dixon,Cari Quoyeser and Chase Liens' "Dedicated to the One I Love" had some nice individual vocal moments, but overall felt stagey and forced.
10) Voices of Creighton Faker, Aaron Marcellus, Nick Boddington and Jen Hirsch blended into one for me on "Sealed With a Kiss" -- nothing memorable.
11) Divas Courtney Williams, Britnee Kellogg and Jessica Phillips may all sing for a living, but there was nothing memorable about their version of "You Keep Me Hangin' On."
12) Goofy group of Clayton Farhat, Scott Dangerfield, Adam Lee Decker and Curtis Gray may have dressed up as Elvis for "Jailhouse Rock" but they sure didn't thrill like the King.

Medicinal leeches

Thousands of leeches are used for medical emergencies every year. The leech�s blood sucking accelerates healing on any deep wound but especially after re-attaching a severed limb or any other deep wound. The leech feeds off the oxygenated blood that would otherwise cause swelling and gangrene. The sucking assists the flow of blood and an anticoagulant in the leech prevents scabbing. The sucking is painless because the leech releases an anesthetic.

Of the 650 types of leeches, only a small number of Hirudo species are used, the most popular being the Hirudo medicinalis. They�re usually sold 20 to a pack, at US$7 apiece.

Tough little planet we live on:

At any time there are some 44,000 storms; lightning strikes the earth 100 times every second, and there are on average 35 earthquakes per day. Those are all acts of God, one may argue, but us humans don�t make it any easier on mother earth. Every year more than 2 million cases of arson is reported, and more than a million trees are chopped just to make toothpicks. Not all is gloom, however: 200 million couples make love (and 400,000 babies are born) every day.

Slavery:

Throughout history some 200 million people were enslaved. For more than 1000 years, Arab traders transported small groups of African slaves; the first record of a sizable slave trade dates to the 7th century. The majority of African slaves were acquired through wars by African rulers. One famous traders, Madam Tinubu, grew from rags to riches from it. But another African trader who called himself Grandy King George once specified a payment of only �one lucking-glass, six foot long by six foot wide,� an armchair, a stool and a cane. Not well known � and hardly spoken about � is that millions of Europeans were also traded as slaves. In the 17th and 18th centuries large numbers of poor whites were kidnapped on the streets of Europe and sold in the West Indies and elsewhere. Most countries in the world, including African countries, traded with slaves. Excluded were Russia and the Balkan countries. And, unlike what you might have expected, the slave trade is very active today still.

Alexander Graham Bell disliked telephones

When the telephone was introduced in 1876, a Western Union internal memo noted: �This �telephone� has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a means of communication. The device is of no value to us.� In 1879, W. H. Preece, a Post Office engineer, testified to a House of Commons Committee that Britain had little use of the telephone because: �Here we have a superabundance of messengers, errand boys and things of that kind�

Even Alexander Graham Bell, who was awarded the patent for the invention of the telephone, disliked telephones so much that he refused to have one in his office. But that should not come as a surprise because both his mother and wife was deaf and perhaps Bell � who also was a speech teacher to the deaf � was only considering them.

When Bell passed away in 1922, every telephone served by the Bell system in the USA and Canada was silent for one minute.

Television firsts

The first public television pictures were transmitted in 1926. The first TV interview was made with Irish actress Peggy O�Neil in April 1930. The first televised sporting event was a Japanese elementary school baseball game, broadcast in September 1931. The first daily broadcast was started by the BBC in November 1936. The first TV commercial was a 20-second ad for a Bulova clock, broadcasted by WNBT, New York during a game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies in July 1941. The first regular TV soap was DuMont TV�s A Woman to Remember, which began its run in February 1947.

Bulova paid $9 for that first TV spot in 1941. Bulova also was the first watch in space, where more people have been than to the bottom of the ocean. The deepest point being the Mariana Trench off Guam in the Pacific Ocean; it is 6.77 miles (10,9 km) below sea level.

Electricity first discovered 2 500 years ago

Electricity was first discovered about 2 500 years ago. The Greek scientist Thales of Miletus (c. 620 BCE � c. 546 BC) noticed that a piece of amber (the hard fossilized sap from trees) attracted straw or feathers when he rubbed it with a cloth. The word �electricity� comes from the Greek word for amber � �elektron�. Thales is also known as the father of philosophy.

The word �electric� was first used in 1600 by William Gilbert, a doctor to Queen Elizabeth I. He carried out experiments and discovered that materials such as diamond, glass and wax behaved in a similar way to amber.

Count Alessandro Volta invented the first battery in the 18th century. He called it a �voltaic pile.� It consisted of a pile of zinc and silver or copper discs separated by pads moistened with an acid solution. The unit for measuring a unit of electricity, a volt, is named after Count Volta.

During the 1860s, George Leclanche developed a battery which did not use dangerous acids, known as the dry-cell battery. The batteries we use in flash lights, portable radios, etc. are based on Leclanche�s design.

Every year thousands of people are electrocuted but few die of it directly. Instead, more people die in the almost 10 000 fires that are caused by overloaded receptacles. Don�t overload your plugs and limit the use of extension cords by using them only for temporary operations.

End of world predictions

You should live every day as if it is your last. That may be easier said than done. But what if you really knew the exact day when will the world end?

There have been and still are many End-of-World predictions:

In the year 70, Rabbi Jose, the Galilean, predicted that the world would end in the year 130.

In 90 CE, Saint Clement 1 predicted that the world would end at any moment.

Apparently a writer called Tichonus predicted the end of the world would take place in the year 381.

Both Hyppolytus (170-236) and Lactantius (250-330) put the date at about the year 500.

In the 900s, many predicted that the year 1000 would be the end of time.

In 1147, Gerard of Poehlde said the world would end in 1306.

In 1179, John of Toledo predicted the end of the world during 1186.

Joachim of Fiore (1135-1202) suggested the world might end at around the year 1300.

Mother Shipton (1488-1561) predicted the world would end in 1881.

In the early 1500s, Zwickau prophets (a Christian sect) believed that the world would end soon (around 1520).

Joseph Smith (b. 1805, founder of the Latter Day Saints movement, the Mormons) said, �I prophesy in the name of the Lord God, and let it be written � the Son of Man will not come in the clouds of heaven till I am eighty-five years old.� Which would have been the year 1890 � but he was assassinated in 1844.

In 1836, John Wesley (co-founder of the Methodist Church) wrote that �the time, times and half a time� of Revelation 12:14 were 1058 and 1836, �when Christ should come.� His brother Charles (the other co-founder) predicted in 1794 that Doomsday would take place in that year.

In 1874, Charles Taze Russell predicted the Rapture in 1910 and the end of the world in 1914.

When the Jews reclaimed Jerusalem in 1967 many predicted the end of time is near.

Isaac Newton calculated that the world will end in 2060.

Nostradamus predicted it to be the year 3786 or 3797.

The Islamic faith Qiyamah (the Day of Resurrection) is predicted �When immorality overtakes shamelessness and is perpetrated publicly,� amongst other things.

And, according to The Bible, in Matt 24:36 : �No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.�

In the meantime, try to live every day as if it is your last. Smile more and love more.

10 good uses for salt

Just a pinch of it and it�s worth it. We�re talking salt here. Used throughout human history, mentioned often in the Bible, ubiquitous and cheap. Mined from salt rocks and extracted from sea water, salt is� well, the �salt of the earth.� You can�t live without it healthily. At the same time, you can�t live healthily with too much of it. Get the balance right � in your food and in your live � and salt is worth it�s own weight.

10 surprising good uses for salt

1. Deter ants
Sprinkle salt in doorways, on window sills and anywhere else ants use to sneak into your house. It�s a sure way to keep them out!

2. Kill grass and weeds growing in cracks in your driveway
Tired of weeding your driveway? Sprinkle salt on the grass and pour very hot water over it. Not only is this a highly effective way to kill unwanted plants, it�s also eco-friendly and cheap.

3. Say goodbye to fleas
If your dogs have fleas, simply wash their doghouse and blankets in salt water. If you�re worried your dogs may have brought fleas into your house, simply sprinkle your carpets lightly with salt and then brush it in. Leave it for 12 hours and vacuum thoroughly.

4. Pick up a dropped egg
If you drop an egg on the kitchen floor, sprinkle salt on the mess and leave it there for 20 minutes. You�ll be able to wipe it right up.

5. Clean up oven spills quickly
If a pie or casserole bubbles over in the oven, pour a handful of salt on top of the spill. It won�t smoke, smell and, most importantly, will bake into a crust that makes the mess easier to clean once it�s cooled.

6. Clean brown spots off your iron
Simply sprinkle salt on a sheet of waxed paper, slide the iron across it and rub lightly with silver polish. Your iron will look like brand-new in no time.

7. Remove stains from your coffee pot
Fill it with 1/4 cup of table salt and a dozen ice cubes. Swish the mixture around, let it sit for half an hour, fill it with cold water and rinse. Your coffee pot will look brand new.

8. Keep your windshield frost-free
Dip a sponge into salt water and rub it on windows, and they won�t frost up even when the mercury drops below zero.

9. Shell nuts more easily
Soak pecans and walnuts in salt water for a few hours before shelling them. Doing so will make it easier to remove the meat.

10. Drip-proof candles
If you soak new candles in a strong salt solution for a few hours, then dry them well, they won�t drip when you burn them.

Leonardo da Vinci the genius

Leonardo da Vinci, who was born in Vinci, near Florence in 1452, is known for his visionary ideas. He made sketches of scissors, the parachute, helicopter, airplanes, and engineering designs, some of which came into use 400 years after his death in 1519. But his notebooks never provided an explanation on the mechanics of his inventions. In fact, it is not known if he ever even constructed any of the ideas himself. What is known is that he could write with the one hand and draw with the other simultaneously.

In his last 6 years, Leonardo da Vinci worked for King Francis I of France. The king bought one of Leonardo�s paintings, which he hung in his bathroom. Called La Gioconda, this portrait of Lisa Gherandini was the first painting to feature fading colors to create a sense of aerial perspective. Today it is better known as the Mona Lisa.

In 1912, the Mona Lisa was stolen from the Louvre, Paris. It took almost 3 years to recover. During that time, 6 forgeries turned up in the USA, each selling for a very high price. The original is, obviously, priceless.

Hot Presidential affairs

John F Kennedy made love in a closet while telling his mistress about another president who did the same. That President being Warren G. Harding, whose hysterical wife was attacking the secret service agent outside the White House office at the time. Franklin D. Roosevelt had an affair with the first lady�s personal secretary. Lyndon B. Johnson made love to a secretary on the oval office desk. Bill Clinton�s contribution � with ardent assistance by Monica Lewinsky � is well publicized but taking the cake is John F Kennedy, who is said to have smoked marijuana with a nude playgirl while he joked about being too wasted to �push the button� in case of nuclear attack.

Not much is known about the extramarital affairs of US Vice Presidents. Which is kinda odd considering the Vice President has much more time than the President to live up to his title preamble. The Vice President has only one official duty: to preside over the Senate and to cast tie-breaking votes there.

Iraq war civilian casualties

While people are still debating the real reason for the Iraq war the casualty numbers for soldiers and civilians keep climbing. According to Just Foreign Policy, more than 1.3 million Iraqis have died since the military invasion of Iraq was launched in March 2003. According to AntiWar, the Iraq war has caused an estimated 100 000 US soldiers wounded and more than 4 000 killed in action (the current war in Afghanistan has claimed the lives of more than a thousand troops and 20 000 civilians).

The human cost of the wars in Iraq is tremendous. It is estimated that 100 000 Iraqi soldiers were killed during the first 100 hours of the Gulf War in 1991. During the Iran-Iraq war 1980 � 1988, one of the biggest conflicts of the 20th century, more than a million people lost their lives.

The reason for war is not always clear. The weapons of mass destruction were never found in Iraq. Perhaps the cause of the wars in Iraq was the greed for oil, as also tactfully explained by Robert Newman in History of Oil. Perhaps it was Sadam Hussein�s attempt to debase the US dollar as the reserve currency for oil, as explained by William Clark and discussed on Energy Bulletin. Or retaliation for 9/11. Or all of the above.

Two sides to a war

Whatever the reasons for war, the picture is never pretty. The video, titled Collateral Murder, released by WikiLeaks, showing innocent civilians being mowed down by a US military helicopter in 2007 resulted in an international outcry. It makes one realize that bullets are cheap but lives are not.

U.S. invasion of Canada

The United States military developed the War Plan Red � or �Joint Army and Navy Basic War Plan � Red� � in the 1920s. The detailed Plan Red was augmented and amended in the 1930s. It envisioned the invasion of Canada by the United States to hurt the interests of the United Kingdom. Later, Plan Red called for the US military to invade Bermuda and Britain�s Caribbean assets. Australia and New Zealand were singled out as British allies and enemy powers.

The document was declassified in 1974. It was only the last of many such color-coded contingency war plans.
